Workshop to teach Veterans Mental Health First Aid

Mohave Valley Daily News - 6/25/2018

BULLHEAD CITY - People interested in learning how to provide mental health first aid to veterans are invited to attend training from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Southwest Behavioral and Health Services, 2580 Highway 95.

The goal of the session is to draw in more veteran-mentors to work with veterans going through the county's Veterans Treatment Courts. Some of the time will focus on the mentor application and handbook.

People trained in Veterans Mental Health First Aid can help to:

Break down the stigma associated with mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disordersReach out to those who suffer in silence and feel reluctant to seek helpLet veterans know that support is available in their communityProvide community resource informationMake mental healthcare and treatment accessible to thousands in need

Professionals who also could benefit from the training include teachers, school administrators, first responders, coaches, faith-based leaders, behavioral health providers, community leaders, youth leaders and parents. Anyone in the community is invited to attend.

All who complete the training can learn to increase awareness and knowledge about mental health and substance abuse; decrease fear and negative reactions to human beings experiencing problems; and, walk away feeling comfortable to help others in the community.

The training is free. Pack a lunch because the meal time is only 30 minutes and discussion about the training material will continue as people eat.

A portion of this training will include going over the mentor application and handbook. This training is sponsored by the Veterans Treatment Courts of Kingman and Bullhead City and Southwest Behavioral and Health Services.
